Late June in the
South West of the UK can mean a soaking at the Pilton (Glastonbury) Music
Festival, or a chilled out weekend with great company, good food, & way too
much beer at The Wessex Weekender. In it's 5th year the event has an
unusual format in that there is no 'Show & Shine'. It is geared solely
toward laid back enjoyment of the participants.
As usual the Friday
night cruise destination was picturesque Poole Harbour. This is by invitation
of the local council - how refreshing is that when 'Big Brother' is said to be
on the hunt for Hot Rodding? They even supply the marshals for the event but
they could not stop the arrival of a biting cold offshore wind that had people
'hiding' in every available pub & chip shop until it was time for the
return leg of the cruise. |

Back at the
campsite the Bristol 'Posse' settled in to Richard & Mary Roberts' awning
for an evening of light libation & banter (a good drink & p*ss take!).
Saturday sees an all day 'Treasure Hunt' for those who wish, or general couch
potatoeing - albeit in lawn chairs - with drive by car assessments for others.
The BBQ prepared by the Wessex crew is always a highlight with participants
only having to supply their own meat & drink. |

An afternoon walk
to the local pub & more beer/wine did mean an early bath for some on
Saturday night though. Sunday morning sees most breaking camp but as the normal
site 'vacate time' does not apply, even that is a laid back affair. Some chose
to stay on a few more days in this delightful area to make the most of the
georgeous weather that had arrived on Saturday morning. |

Notable cars
this year (apart from the Bristol Hot Rods representatives, of course!) were
the ex Dave Spreadbury 'Rat Catcher' Willy's Coupe, now owned by a Wessex club
member and a sweet '27 'Turtle Deck' T with Fiat twin cam power - you can't
argue with 60 mpg these days! Reg Hucker's, Tony Puttick built, Austin Dorset
was also well received. |

In particular, a
special thanks from us all this year to Richard 'Neptune' Black who worked
tirelessly throughout the weekend. Pete (& Carol) Daniels (Wessex Chairman)
having mistakenly booked a holiday that started on the Saturday of the event!
Well done Wessex Rod & Custom - see you next year. Oh, and to all Bristol
crew not attending, be there next year or you may face the ultimate
sanction
.removal to Bracknell!
